About the Department

The Department of Social Work

The department was established when the school was founded in 2001. To broaden the scope of the social work education, the department was expanded to include a postgraduate program and a continuing education program in 2005. Around the same time, the school was granted a comprehensive university status by the Ministry of Education (MOE), and renamed to "Asia University" as a result of its excellence in pedagogy and research.

Afterwards, the department became part of the College of Health Science. In 2007, the university reorganized its academic units, incorporating the department into The College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

With the university's goal to help and guide students in developing the core competencies, “health”, “caring”, “innovation”, and “excellence”, the department re-designed its curriculum to nurture quality and professional social workers. In addition to the main social work courses, the curriculum consists of the following three tracks, or courses in a particular subject: the Health Care and Social Care track, the Social Work track, and the Minority Empowerment and Judicial Protection track.

Mission

Based on the university's mission to deliver care, innovative strategies, and to provide a high quality education, the department created a postgraduate program, and works hand in hand with welfare organizations.

It aims to equip students with humanitarian, professional, and innovation capabilities, and with the skills to act at the grass roots as well as at a more comprehensive level. Upon graduation, the students will be capable of applying their skills in social welfare services and organizations, and promote a friendly, harmonious, and healthy community development.

Vision

To become one of the top 10 departments in the social work field, and to help students to develop the experience, knowledge, and skills to become social work professionals, with the ability to address complex issues in our society.

  • A Close Staff-Student Relationship: The staff has a professional responsibility to care for the student’s educational development, helping students through the challenges they might encounter. By providing a supportive climate, the students will have better academic achievements and success.
  • A Flexible Curriculum: The department is adaptive to social trends and changes in the labor market. To help students understand these changes, undergraduates must choose at least one of the following modules: Social Work Specializing Module, Health Care and Community Work Module, and Empowerment and Judiciary System Module.
  • The Integration of Classroom-Learning and Field Practicum of Community Organizations and Development: Students are equipped with the knowledge of social work theories and practice, especially with the three core social work methods: casework, group work, and community work. The department has long been involved with the developments of local communities, offering students a unique opportunity to carry out methods of community work practice into the field.
  • The Emphasis on Multicultural Education: The department has guaranteed an annual intake of ten indigenous students, who have contributed a great deal to the enhancement of the department’s multicultural learning environment. Therefore, social policies and social work courses regarding minorities in Taiwan have also been formed, to help students understand cultural practice and the issues that minority groups face. 
  • Valuable Research Skills: Fifteen full-time academic staff in the department specializes in a variety of subjects and areas in social work, including community development, ethnic and multicultural social policy and social work, social work in the judiciary system, counseling and guidance, and sociology. The department also collaborates with other academic institutes domestically and internationally, allowing students the opportunity to develop their research skills in other places.
